Rebirth
her rebirth was stunning –
she lifted herself up from
the depths of despair,
grasped her dreams,
embedded them in her heart,
and walked forward into
a future that only her will
and vision could control.

Such powerful words. This poem invokes an image of a strong, commanding woman, smiling a knowing smile, weighty in her presence and resilience – a force to be reckoned with and a woman I aspire to become!
This quote reminds me of my daughter Crystal, and the journey from her spiral into addiction to her remarkable recovery and rebirth. A miracle in so many ways, but also a story of the determination and courage that we all possess inside us. The magic of the human heart is that even in our darkest moments, it spurs us on to reach beyond our brokenness and strive for our dreams.
I believe we all have the potential to experience rebirth in our lives; to pick ourselves up after a fall, a bad choice, or a simple mistake - rising from the muck and the darkness with renewed daring and wisdom. It’s not easy. We can allow the story of our lives to be written by others, or we can reclaim the narrative and become the authors of our own destiny. I hope to author a lengthy story with many chapters over the course of my life. One that will be packed in adventure, heavy with truth, deep in love, and endless in growth.
With each chapter, I hope to enlarge my story and explore new dimensions of myself. As my life story expands, there will be pages I need to tag so I can scroll back to remember names and places – hold onto memories. But there are also chapters that are best to permanently keep shut, not so much forgotten but closed. Those chapters are filled with people and stories that no longer serve me. I pray to close those chapters with gratitude for lessons learned and forgiveness. It’s only in forgiving ourselves and others that we are given the opportunity to inch closer to the person we hope to become.
Don’t get stuck on one page or in one chapter of your life. Take the risk and turn the pages to see where your story leads - be brave! Flipping back through my life, I can see how much I have changed and grown over the years, seeing the older versions of myself as often unrecognizable. I have had many transformations – not all positive, but I believe I have evolved into someone softer and quieter, not caring much for the things and people that once controlled me. I am grateful.
Recently, Crystal traveled to the East Coast to see her sisters. Seeing pictures of my three girls and two granddaughters together brought such joy to my soul. It wasn’t something I was sure I would every see again, but reconciliation is always possible where love thrives. I try to remind myself every day that life is good, and we never know what the next turn of the page will bring.
